Advances in thymoma imaging.
Thymoma is the most common primary neoplasm of the anterior mediastinum, but it accounts for <1% of all adult malignancies. It is the most common of the thymic epithelial neoplasms, which, in addition to thymoma, include thymic carcinoma and thymic carcinoid. Because of the rarity of thymoma, it has not been studied thoroughly. Over the last half decade, there has been increased interest in thi...
متن کاملCystic thymoma: diagnosis by cross-sectional imaging.
Thymomas are the most common primary tumours of the anterior mediastinum in adults, and are composed of a mixture of lymphocytes and epithelial cells in varying proportions, with scattered cystic regions of various size seen in 40% of thymomas pathologically (1). However, those that resulted in almost complete cystic transformation have been reported rarely (24). The present case report describ...
متن کاملThymoma.
A review of the evaluation, treatment, and end results for 52 patients with thymoma treated at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (1950-1984) is presented. The objective of the study was to examine the influence of a number of clinical characteristics on survival, including histologic and staging classifications, associated diseases, symptom status, and treatment. Forty-nine pa...
متن کاملIntraoperative imaging identifies thymoma margins following neoadjuvant chemotherapy
Near infrared (NIR) molecular imaging is useful to identify tumor margins during surgery; however, the value of this technology has not been evaluated for tumors that have been pre-treated with chemotherapy. We hypothesized that NIR molecular imaging could locate mediastinal tumor margins in a murine model after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Flank thymomas were established on mice. Two separate exp...
متن کاملThymoma
Thymomas, with their diverse signs, symptoms and relationships to other systemic diseases, are not infrequently encountered. Histologic classification is now standardized. Thymoma is associated with other disorders, such as myasthenia gravis and pure red cell aplasia. Proper staging, careful histologic evaluation and appropriately selected therapy are necessary to ensure long-term survival.
